Safely dispose of hazardous waste

The Region of Peel is reminding residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste at the Region's Community Recycling Centres and not to set it out with their weekly waste collection.

"Some residents may not realize that after waste is collected from the curb, waste management workers

come in contact with the material," said Ben Shepherd, manager of waste collection and processing. "It is important that residents only dispose of acceptable waste at the curb and make sure that hazardous waste is not included in their curbside garbage or recycling collection, or poured down the drain."

August 28, Peel's Integrated Waste Management Facility was forced to temporarily shut down operations after a worker came into contact with a hazardous substance.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of household hazardous waste, free of charge, at any of the Region's Community Recycling Centres (CRCs).

Hazardous waste includes items such as pool chemicals, motor oils, paint, fuels and pesticides. For CRC locations and a complete list of household hazardous waste items, visit peelregion.ca/waste or refer to pages 14 to 19 in the 2006-2007 Guide to Peel's Waste Management Programs and Services, delivered to all Peel households this past May.
