Celebrities reach out at first street hockey tournament in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel is gearing up for their first annual Street Hockey Day in Canada Saturday, June 10.

Teams are scheduled to gather at Burnhamthorpe Community Centre, 1500 Gulleden Dr. in Mississauga, at 9 a.m. for a fast-paced, fun-filled, 4-on-4 tournament.

A host of activities have been planned including a celebrity showcase showdown that has the highest fundraising team playing guest celebrities, Mike Hogan - The FAN 590; Brian Beisel - Toronto Rock; Gary Leeman, Bill Derlago, Jim Harrison and Jack Valiquette - Toronto Maple Leafs; and Sami Joe Small - 2002 Canadian Olympic Team.

In addition, Big Brothers Big Sisters enthusiastic planning committee has co-ordinated games to test your agility, hardest shot, accuracy, basketball and putting skills. Boston Pizza will be onsite serving pop and pizza for $3 with all proceeds being directed back to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Event giveaway bags including tshirts and other goodies will be distributed to all participants and teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games with the championship game scheduled at 4 p.m.

"We are inviting companies and individuals to register a team in support of this great cause," said Cathy Denyer, BBBS executive director. "Each team is asked to pay a $150 registration fee and each player is asked to collect a minimum of $50 in pledges. Money raised from this event will help to match the 300 children who are currently waiting for a caring adult mentor."
