Local school starts school in Africa
Recently, the students and teachers of King's College were shown a special presentation by Mrs. Pat Long, the mother of one of King's alumnae. The presentation was to show and teach others about the trip that King's College students, parents, and teachers took to Cameroon, Africa from July 3 to 10 in 2005.
Since 2003, the students of King's College have held fund-raisers to gather money to begin building a school in Cameroon, and this goal was the main reason for the trip. The school, named Eta College, started this September, and our students and teachers traveled to Cameroon to help build a library from the most recent funds set toward Eta College. This school will provide education to the local children and serve as a local library. Eta College and Learning Center is located in Kumba, Cameroon, a city of roughly 500,000 people.
In just three years, the students of King's College have managed to send enough used books to build the largest private library in the city. It is sad that even though the library is the largest in the city, it is only a small collection of books equivalent to perhaps three bookshelves.
The week-long trip to Cameroon was recorded mostly through a collection of photographs shown in Mrs. Long's presentation. During their time in Africa, the students teachers, and parents were able to discover Africa's natural beauty, its people, and its culture, where our own Mr. Eta the director and one of the founders of King's College originates from.
King's College is continuing our fund-raising, and our next event is our "Tastes of Africa" dinner April 22. All proceeds from the event will be sent to support the Cameroon Learning Center and the night will include a presentation on the trip to Cameroon, an African dinner, and an African drumming workshop.
If you're interested in attending the "Tastes of Africa" dinner, tickets are $50 for adults and $40 for those 18 and under. Please contact Bev Landovskis at 905-880-7645, King's College School to reserve tickets and please make your cheques payable to King's College School.
The "Tastes of Africa" dinner is guaranteed to be wonderful, and the money raised from it is highly appreciated in supporting the Eta College and Learning Center. Other fund-raising events, like our annual car wash and famine, will be happening in May to also raise money to be sent to Africa. If you're interested in helping or donating, please feel free to contact us. We cannot thank you enough for your support and donation and we hope to see you at some of our events!
